Possible 2011 Holden Barina Leaks

Recent patent filings made by GM in the US this week has revealed the upcoming Chevrolet Aveo. This vehicle is closely tied in with the Holden Barina we see here in Australia.

Images have been released by car news site, Carscoop.

No details on specifications other than what we can see in images. The new angry look and sporty wheels are definately set to appeal to young buyers looking for a small car.

A turbo-charged engine developed by GM with a 1.4 litre 4 cyclinder capacity has been rumoured to be available in the higher-spec sports version of the new Aveo and could very well make it's way into the Barina and possibly even the Cruze. This engine produces 103kW and 200Nm of torque.

More Holden V6s To Head Overseas

Holden has made an announcement to say that it's V6 engine demand has increased internationally. This has sparked an increase in engine production for the Port Melbourne produced from 320 units per day to 440.

The V6 is shipped to GM China where it's used as a 3.0 litre V6 for locally produced cars.

South Korea, which already imports the V6 for the Captiva, will be exporting extra for a 3.2 litre V6 to feature in Daewoo vehicles.

The US also is a major consumer of our V6 engine and is used to power the Opel Insignia OPC and Cadilac SRX in a 2.8 litre turbo varient.

To meet the extra demand Holden has stated that extra positions are available at it's Port Melbourne assembly line and will be made available to employees at the Elizabeth plant in South Australia.

Holden Ute Gets 5 Star Safety Rating

The first ute to be sold in Australia with a 5 star safety rating is the VE Holden Ute. This means that the whole VE Commodore range boasts the 5 star crash safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program.

At this stage the Ford Falcon ute only has a 4 star rating.

HDT Announce VE SS Group A

HDT in Queensland have announced a mean looking VE SS Based Group A limited to 250 builds. It resembles the SS Group A VK Commodore from back in the 80s.

As for power this Commodore uses the 270kW V8 standard on the SS and manages to get a sweet 350kW out of it. According to HDT, if you say the word (and pay the price) they'll happily bump that up to 500kW for you!

To get the 350kW they have installed a camshaft with a few tweaks, performance ECU reprogram, custom exhaust system, and a cool air intake system among other mods.

Body changes are very similar to the original VK SS Group A. The front bonnet recieves a bump, the grill is made to look very similar to the VK, air slots in the front bumper, Formula Blue paintjob, wheels, rear wing, and various decals and badges.

The VE SS Group A also gets a Blitzen spring and shockie upgrade, brake upgrade, and 19" wheels.

It is only priced at $75,000 and no doubt this could be one of the modern day collectors like the W427 and could hopefully fetch $120,000+ in 20 years time like the VK SS Group A cars do today!

Caprice Police Car in America

The Caprice is being used as a Police Car in America.

Known as the "Zeta" Platform over there, the Chev Caprice will not acutally go on sale but instead fleeted as Police vehicles set for rollout in 2011.

They will have the V6 engine with SIDI AFM and also a E85 355hp V8 model later on.

New SS-V SE with Pontiac G8 GT Front

Holden have released to the press information about the new "SS-V Special Edition" and the special features package that will be available for it.

With the Pontiac G8 (VE Commodore variant exported to the USA) coming to an end in the US, Holden is taking on it's twin-nostal bonnet and big-grill/air-dam front bumper.

It will be available in sedan, sports wagon, and ute body. Manual sedan starts at $55,290 RRP, Manual Sportswagon starts at $57,290 RRP, and manual Ute at $47,490 RRP. 6 Speed Auto is $2000 extra.

Question: Where are they going to put the Holden badge on the front? What aftermarket Chevy grills will come to the market? Will people bother putting Pontiac badges on the front?

Clarkson Gives Verdict on the VXR8 Bathurst

New Holden SIDI 3.0L Direct Injection V6

900km from one tanks sounds possible - but never before in a Commodore!

The new SIDI Direct Injection 3.0L V6 available in the Holden Commodore makes it possible to reduce fuel usage by 12% and reach 9.3L/100km in the Omega (according to Holden). The 3.6L V6 found in the Auto SV6 with SIDI can achieve a 10% improvement allowing 10.1L/100km (Holden claims).

The 3.0L V6 produced 190kW (up from 175kW the 3.6 Alloytec once used) and the 3.6L that teh Calais and SV6 use is up to 210kW from 195kW.

Combined urban and highway driving scenarios can see ~780km out of a 70L tank on the Omega.

This is exactly what the large family car market needs. Not only are they helping the green movement in motoring but ensuring that the fuel bill each week is less for the families driving.

HSV E2 Released

A new style and plenty of features have been given to the new line second series of the VE HSV models. This is the first update to the new VE Commodore released a few years ago.

A Pontiac G8 bonnet, Audi inspired driving lights, larger air dams, new wheels, and remodeled back bumpers all give the new HSV a mean and wider look. The Grange also gets a tough and taller front grill.

A new "Competition Mode" also allows the driver to reduce the stability control systems for thrill seeking purposes without entirely turning them off. A Launch Control allows the driver to rev to the band of RPM where there is high torque for a quick and easy take off.

Most importantly the GTS has an upgraded powerplant! It now has a 325kW 6.2 litre LS3 V8 instead of the 317kW LS3 that the other models get. The suspension on the GTS has also been stiffened.

Optiional extras will be available with E2 models, and will be sold as “SV Enhanced”. This includes leather seats, wheel upgrades, Bi-Modal exhaust and performance suspension.

Vauxhall VXR8 Bathurst and Maloo VXR on Top Gear

The VXR8 Bathurst is essentially a new VE2 GTS that has had a Supercharger dropped in it by Walkinshaw allowing it to produce 564bhp @ 6000rpm and hitting 100kmph in an estimated 4.6 seconds. It is only £45,000 and is compared to the BMW M3.

Figures have been released regarding new car sales in the first three months of 2008. It has seen the Toyota Corolla has taken the number one spot from the Holden Commodore for the first time in 12 years.

Over 500 Corolla sales puts the popular small car in the lead so far in 2008.

Fuel economy will have to be big on the to do list for Holden and their fuel guzzling V6 and V8 Commodores. Perhaps a Diesel for the Commodore would be more strategic than a LS7 V8? Sad, but true. However, people are still buying the V8s - Australian's love their fast cars.

HSV E Series Gets New LS3 Engine & Wheels

The E Series range is getting an upgrade from the Chev sourced LS2 6.0 litre V8 to a LS3 6.2 litre V8. This will see a power increase from 307kW to 317kW.

The LS3 will appear in the Australian export G8 GXP and will output a reduced 402hp. Since the LS3 would be used in the exports, HSV must have figured that they might as well use it in the local performance vehicles too!

The new Ford Falcon release will see the new FPV GT with a 315kW. The LS3 provides an extra 2kW will will hopefully shatter the Ford. Lets hope.

Personally it would probably have been better off leaving the LS3 for the E Series GTS so there is more distinction other than a few nitty gritty upgrades that really rob the GTS of it's exclusive status.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Maloo R8 and the Grange are the only models to have a reduction of 0.1L/100km to 14.5l/100km. Automatic models have seen an increase.

Along with the release of the LS3 is a new Red colour available on luxury models such as the Senator, and a 20inch wheels package upgrade available on all models.

US Don't Want Coupe 60, Yet

At a New York car show, vice president of General Motors, Bob Lutz, also mentioned that they are not interested in taking on the new Monaro concept at this stage during press interviews.

Mr Lutz mentioned that the issue of fuel economy is too greater deal and therefore they don't see the Coupe 60 being a wise business move. The issue of fuel economy could eventually be bad for our V8 export market.

Apparently Holden dealers and head office have been receiving many calls from keen buyers of the new Monaro shown at the Melbourne Car Show as the Coupe 60.

Holden sold 14 000 Monaros from 2002 to 2006 and more than 40 000 Monaros were exported to the US as Pontiac GTOs alone.

Alan Batey, Holden's executive director of sales and marketing, said that he does not plan on the Coupe 60 to be produced as it was only meant to be a show car. However, it's good to know that Holden designers are still playing around with Coupes, as it means there could be one again in the future.

Holden Ute to go on Sale in US

A Holden ute was recently shown off at a New York car show, shortly after a VE Commodore badged as a Pontiac went on sale.

The ute, which has not yet been given a name, was shown off by rapper 50 Cent. He has been sponsered by GM and was quoted "There's a lot of people who want a pick up and a sports car, well this thing does both."

The ute market in the US is a big thing. The Holden ute has an iconic status in Australia so getting sales may prove to be a marketing challenge. However I don't think there are too many utes in the US with a sedan variant like the Commodore.

50 Cent has not yet driven the car but did mention at a press conference that he'd like to see a bit of chrome on it.

Goodbye, Rodeo

Holden has announced that it will announce a new light-commercial vehicle to replace the Rodeo.
GM are formally separating with Thailand car company, Isuzu.

The Colorado, a name used by Chevrolet, will eventually replace the Isuzu sourced Rodeo. No confirmation whether the Colorado will be imported without any visual modification, so it may look appear like the following photo:

Holden were given 3 months to continue using the Rodeo before they had to replace it.

Isuzu, however, won't isolate itself from the Australia light commercial vehicle market as it will be realising it's own version of the Rodeo under it's name D-Max.

HSV W427 - The LS7 is Here

Holden, at the Melbourne Car Show, has finally made the rumours a reality by releasing a HSV sporting the Chevrolet LS7 V8 power plant. The W427 is a tribute to the "Walky" 1988 Group A VL SS Commodore, the W representing Tom Walkinshaw and 427 representing the motors cubic inch capacity. This is a perfect addition to their 20 year anniversary celebrations.

The colour is also the same panorama silver colour as shown at the Melborne Car Show in 1988 on the Walky.

When released, the vehicle is expected to be the fastest ever legal street production car in Australia (and I think it'll stay that way for a while). HSV have not realeased any performance figures as of yet, however, they expect it to be in excess of 370kW. I don't see any Ford competition any time soon.

Holden also mentioned that it is one of the safest cars that they have ever produced. It has customized ESP calibration, six airbags, a new six piston front braking system that Holden claim will provide a 50% increase in pad area, and an improved MRC.

The W427 will go into production mid year and will hopefully be in showrooms in the third quarter.

US No Longer Wants VE Sportwagon

GMs Bob Lutz has told Australian journalists at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show that the VE Sportwagon will not be imported to the US as the Pontiac G8 Wagon.

The cost associated for the vehicle to meet US regulations is the main reason. However, how popular are wagons in the US anyway! German imports of sports wagons such as BMW, Mercedes and Audi sell at very low numbers.

One of the main reasons that Holden gave the Sportwagon the green light was for the export revenue, after GM took an interest. They are going to have to rely on local sales to make it all seem worth while.

There hasn't been much word on a standard VE wagon, which are popular amongst fleet purchases.

Cadillac has just revealed the new CTS Coupe concept. The front grill is huge, the wheels are huge, the back is huge - overall the car looks huge! Think futuristic - iRobot or some other movie set in the future.

Featuring 20 inch wheels on the front and 21 inch wheels on the back, the CTS concept will have a 3.6L V6 or a 2.9L Turbo Diesel.

I really hope that this isn't the look that Holden will be heading towards when the new Statesmen/Caprice models come out. We already have the ugly 300C roaming Australian streets, and that's all the big-grilled and fat-reared GM influence we want in our long wheel base market.

A bit off topic, yes, however I hope this new GM "fashion" in car exterior never brushes off on our Holdens!

Sportwagon Spotted Again

The Holden Commodore Sportwagon has been spotted on the streets once again!

This following specimen was found in the car park of the 2007 Drive Car Awards by Drive photographers. (link)
This particular wagon is said to be a V6 as there are only two exhaust outlets compared to the V8's four outlets on the concept shown in Sydney. There were reported to be a change in the front of the vehicle in this production model in relation to the front lights.

This is the third time I've seen the spied Holden Sportwagon on the internet. There is another photo of the pre-production vehicle at McDonalds and another one of the vehicle in a car park near a beach.

Have a look around Victorians, there are said to be a few roaming the Melbourne streets! Send in any spy shots if you manage to grab some!

Holden Recalls VE V6 Models

Holden has announced a recall on all VE Commodores and WM Statesmans/Caprices with a V6 engine after finding that the fuel line rubs against the engine compartment potentially causing leaks. The issue has been reported in 20 vehicles so far.

This is the third time the VE has been recalled.

All vehicles built in Adelaide from September 2006 until December 2006 are affected. This adds up to over 86 000 vehicles. Protective sleeves will be added to the fuel lines to prevent rubbing against the engine compartment to eliminate the leak. All new vehicles rolling out of Adelaide will have the protective sleeve already installed.

Holden has made the issue public and will be mailing out letters to all owners of vehicles where the recall is required. This recall is expected to take several months, and cost millions of dollars.

Let the LS9 Rumours Commence!

The new LS9 V8 has been presented for the Detroit Auto Show. This 6.2L supercharged 620+hp (462kW) motor will appear in the 2009 Chevy Corvette ZR1.
I wouldn't say that this engine would be picked up by Holden or standard HSV models. I think it would be best suited for a limited GTS-R type vehicle.

However, I'm not sure if HSV would consider blowers due to the transmission and chassis constraints. If HSV does decide to bring in a supercharged motor it would probably be the one they use on the exported VXR8 (397kW BLOWN LS2).

The LS7 has been around for some time now, giving HSV some time to play with it. I think LS7 being on the cards for the next GTS is a better bet.

CSV Let LS7 Loose in GTS

Local Aussie tuner, Corsa Special Vehicles (CSV), have taken a VE GTS and put a LS7 V8 engine taken from a Corvette Z06 in place of the LS2.

The 427 cubic inch Chevy LS7 transplant in the CSV GTS is estimated to put out over 400kW @ 6000rpm of power and 660Nm @ 4800rpm of torque (according to Wheels Magazine Dec 2007). CSV have measured 430hp at the treads!

The motor even features the name of the mechanic that hand built it underneath the red covers.

The CSV GTS comes as a 6 speed auto and will easily run a 0-100kmph in under 4.9 seconds, and 400m in 12.9 seconds @ 187kmph (according to Wheels).

The engine itself costs $17000 (US?), fits exactly in the engine mounts, and bolts straight into the 6 speed auto. The only modification to accommodate the LS7 is fitting of a 8 litre dry sump, as the LS2 does not have one.

The price is set to be just over the AU$110 000 mark. Don't rush out and buy one - think of the fuel and tyre expenses!

Our Monaro on Top Gear

Top Gear, a car show shown on the BBC in the UK, have driven the Holden Monaro aka HSV GTO Coupe aka Vauxhall VXR several times. To say it simply, they loved it. Who can blame them, so do we!

Here are some of their reviews found on YouTube.

This video is of Top Gear presenter, Jeremy Clarkson, reviewing the Monaro as a HSV GTO. This is before they were exported to the UK as the VXR. In this review Jeremy talks about all aspects of the car, a few aspects of Australia - mostly while driving sideways. Got to laugh when he turns the traction control on.

The following video is of Jeremy Clarkson, again, driving the Monaro as a Vauxhall VXR. This is the second generation VXR, boasting the 6 litre LS2 rather than the 5.7 litre LS1. Although the Evo 8 that the VXR is raced against is quick, I do agree that the VXR would be more fun to drive

Next is the second generation Vauxhall VXR tested for it's drift/powerslide ability. Champion Japanese D1 drifters take the VXR around the wet track.

There is another video of the first generation VXR being reviewed when it was first released with the Vauxhall badge. It can be found on the HSV website. It seems that the car is always sideways in all their Monaro segments!

DoD V8 Concept

Back in the early days where reports were passing through about the Million Dollar Baby, the VE Commodore, the V8 was said to have engine cylinders that could simply turn off.

Holden a few days ago at the Australian International Motor Show showed off a concept of such a technology.

Back then it was code named the L76 and featured a technology called Displacement on Demand. Valves, controlled by the engines computer, would cut off supply to selected cylinder lifters. This would close the intake and exhaust of the cylinder and therefore turning the V8 into a "V4".

This technology is used in GMs SUV models and brings fuel economy gains up anywhere between 8-10%.

When the V8 power isn't required the four cylinders will be deactivated - probably at cruising speeds in 4th/5th/6th gear.

This is going to be good for those that hold back from buying a V8 simply because they can’t see the value in spending all that money on fuel. Sales for the V8s should pick up!

The 20th Anniversary Clubsport

A pale brown Clubsport R8 will be the car that marks the 20th anniversary of HSV.

Nothing too radical - no performance or style enhancements that maybe some would have anticipated for such an event for the car company.

HSV have also refreshed their website with a new interface for the 20 year milestone. Users can now view previous models that date back to the "Walky" VL with access to specifications and media.

It's Official - The New HSV E Series Maloo R8

HSV have put up the new E series Maloo on their website after their launch today at the Australian International motor show.

The styling looks very much like people expected - especially the front and sides. However the back lights, especially on the tail section, are very unique and could take some time to warm up to.
Notable feature is the Hard Tonneau with the "twin hooded aero fairings" on the Maloo R8 that has alarm protection and can be released via remote control.

The Maloo comes in nine colours and starts at $59 990 as quoted on the HSV website. A performance pack which includes leather interior and 19" alloy wheels, similar to those on the current GTS, can be optioned to bring the price to $63 740.

The sports ute comes with a 6 speed manual or a 6 speed automatic with Active Gear Selection for an extra $2 000.

Under the hood is a 307 kW, 6.0 litre LS2 Generation 4 alloy V8 - the same found in the other E series HSV models.

This is 10kW more powerful than the "Worlds Fastest Production Ute" record that the Z series Maloo broke at ~275kmph. It would be interesting to see how much faster this E series one would go.

Not clear as to when the Maloo will become available or when orders will be taken, however I'm guessing that it is soon.

VE AWD Ute Impressions

In the GM Inside News Forums, a member call Geary has posted impressions on CGI Automotive of what the VE AWD Ute may look like.

I don't know about the 2009 release, however, it does look accurate.

He does mention in the forum:

- Raised ride height
- Plastic bits
- New Rims
- New tailgate
- Raise tray top
- Hard lid

I don't think Holden will wait to long, judging by the quantity of these I see on the roads, I'd say that the demand for them is large.

Next Monaro/GTO Coupe Impressions

Would You Like Your Clubsport with 400kW?

The Vauxhall VXR8 is the UK equivalent to the current E series HSV Clubsport R8. It comes with the same 6.0 litre LS2 V8 outputing 307kW.

However.

Vauxhall has said that as of next month they will be offering a new engine option. Would you like a supercharger with that LS2 VXR8? Suddenly your 307kW (420hp) LS2 is a 397kW (540hp) BLOWN LS2!
This is a genuine Vauxhall option so it will not defect the three year warranty. Not even when you strap the supercharger on after buying it.

So maybe we can expect something a little more exciting when the next GTS is released.

Chevrolet Lumina SS Spotted in USA

The VE Commodore has been spotted in the US!
Badged as a Chevrolet, and called the Lumina, the Commodore is exported to Arabian countries and has been since the VT days.

Here is a spy shots of the Lumina SS found in Detroit, USA. Yes, strangely enough the US - they don't export them there!. Some speculate this could be the new Chevrolet Impala. Apparently the car had it's hazards on, and the driver was using his laptop. It could also be a test mule with a VE body.

Possible VE Wagon and Maloo Photos Leaked

Just like the E series HSV had photos leaked prior to it's official unveiling, there have been "Official Holden" images of the new VE Wagon and E Series Maloo on forums.

The wagon appears to have an SS flavour. There will definitely be an Omega but no word yet on a Berlina, SV6, or SS V. The back of the wagon also ties well into the VE look and feel.

It appears that they are phone photos taken of a presentation Holden is giving to the dealers on their new vehicles. Lets hope these shots are credible - these are nice looking machines.

The Maloo front looks like the front of any other HSV. The wheels, however, are those that are found on the GTS. The Maloo should be getting the 307kW LS2 V8. It has been rumoured that this Maloo will be lighter than previous. With less weight and more power this could be the fastest Australian production car. There side skirts seem to be unique to the Maloo, whilst the back lights look very similar to those that the VE Ute has.

These images could be bluffs, however this could be another "accidental leakage" stunt pulled by Holden once again. Lets hope we get a definite announcement and some unveiling soon!

So, You're Thinking of Buying a HSV?

This post is a reader contribution by TroyTroy, a man that spent two months deciding whether to get a HSV.

Why I, Troy, bought a HSV VYII Clubsport R8.

When shopping around for a sports car, you're pretty well confronted with a plethora of options ranging from two-door-selfish-skin-cancer-magnets to big aussie family haulers.
Either way, if you don't have mancans you’re pretty well going to look for something quick, powerful and reeks of testosterone. A couple of choices that were recently left for me were STi's, EVO's, FPVs, XR6Ts, HSVs, SS Commodores.
Here's how I made up two months of decision making.......Oh and I didn't want to pay new prices either....stuff paying for two years of significant depreciation for new car smell!

Pros

HSVs don't have lag below 3,000rpm (any 2002-2005 STi owner knows what I’m talking about here)
I can fit a pram..........and something else in the boot
It comes with a factory V8 stereo soundtrack - volume is adjusted by the window switches in the centre console!
It comes with 285kw from the factory.....when STis, EVOs only come with 206Kw, XR6Ts comes with 240Kw (actually less if your measure power the same way GM does) (to be fair, the last three aren't gutless though)
FPVs will probably be called something else in five years time......Tickford again maybe?
SS Commodores are nice...but they didn't come with all the greedy options that I wanted
SS Commodores have frightful resale
Insuring an STI or EVO would leave me no money to mod whatever car I got!
The VYII came with 510Nm of torque- the same as the venerable GTS C4B Engine......without the price tag (by the way a brand new 2007 2.5 Litre STi has only 392Nm of torque). Torque is good because families and all their crap weigh a lot!
The VYII R8 comes with Leather interior, 6 stacker Premium sound with factory sub-woofers, short shifter, 4 air bags, pointless but sexy instrument binnacle, climate control, five thousand different options for how you want your car set up - three trip computers-average and instantaneous fuel usage-etc etc, 19 inch wheels and lastly my favourite - Big Harrop/HSV Brakes - 343mm drilled discs up front...nice. Unlike the FPVs optioned Brembos up front...you get the same calipers on the rear as well with the HSV R8.
The official STI website says that the New STi: "....catapults you 0-100km/h in a mind blowing 5.4secs”......I guess the HSV VYII 5.26 secs must be pretty quick too.....
Repairing Subaru glass-gearboxes are expensive (I've done it)
I can go down to REPCO, Supercheap Auto, or Generic-Parts-R-Us and get most of my spare parts needs for the HSV and I don't have a heart attack when they give me a price for said part. Try that with Subaru or Mitsubishi!
I could have bought a cheaper faster turbo'd sports car for me to get to work in and a second family car....but then I'd have to pay for two Rego's, two insurances, two servicing costs.....I worked out it was cheaper to run and operate a comparatively expensive HSV that can do both jobs well, than buy two cheaper cars.........food for thought
You would think that buying eight spark plugs would be more expensive than four spark plugs......not really, not when you have to buy platinum ones for your Subaru...and it takes twice as long to replace 4 in the Subaru than 8 in the HSV - hence the Platinums.
Subaru and Mitsubishi have next to nothing in terms of interior comforts and options compared to the R8. Dentistry isn't required after driving a HSV (STi suspension)
My wife just wanted to add: "the cup holders are pretty cool in the Holdens too".....thanks hun
You get a better diff ratio than the SS Commodore, you get factory Headers with the HSV...stuff you may need to do with the SS Commodore.
Standard BMW M3's, Porsche Boxters, Ford GT's, STis, EVOs - are now added to your list of cars that you used to think were fast....
It costs only $400-500 to tune your 5.7 Litre V8....to get an extra 20++ Kw........... and better fuel economy to boot.
Fuel economy on the highway with a nagging wife, two crying kids and a boot full of crap is 9.2L/100km (6 Gear - 110km/h - 1,600rpm ish)
Overall - I bought a tomtom with the car....but I still go the long long long way to get home

Cons

Fuel consumption around town is 17.5+ litres/100km

The fuel guage seems to hit Empty at least once every week and half :(
I haven't replaced the 245/35/19 tyres yet......luckily low profile tyres are dropping in price every 6 months
Insurance is worse than an SS Commodore but the HSV does get DNA Datadots standard....(no annoying keypad like the Subaru. The Mitsubishi - well, its probably stolen whilst you've been reading this)
The "285" stickers become a historical momento after you start modding it.
Dumb people call it a Holden. Feel sorry for the poor bugger that paid $70,000 when new, for people to call it a Holden!
I miss AWD in the wet. (Possibly the biggest problem I have with the car)
How come no one told me earlier that the Gen IIIs were damn cheap to modify?
I didn't buy one a lot earlier
Did I mention around-town fuel economy?

Photos of E Series Maloo - Fake?

There have been some photos of the E series Maloo circulating around many internet car news sources. I have come across some that illustrate what the new Maloo might look like. These could well be photoshopped photos.

It seems that the back lights from the above front-on photo appear to wrap the exact same way as the current E series lights do. The Maloo has the GTS wheels, GTS body kit, and by the looks of things a GTS badge on the grill. I smell a fake.

The back of the Maloo shown in the above photo looks familiar. The lights look like an American ute that I've seen somewhere before. Infact, the lights appear to wrap differently than they do in the first photo. The ute still have the GTS body kit and the GTS wheels. Strangely, in the photo, there is no Maloo badging on the side.

Decide for yourself. I do think these two photos are faked. I double there will be a Maloo GTS instead of a Maloo R8. However, these photos give us an idea of what to look forward to when HSV finally reveal the E series Maloo.

VE Ute Revealed

Holden have finally revealed the new VE shaped Ute.

The ute comes in four flavours:

Omega
SV6
SS
SS V

The Omega comes with the 180kw Alloytec V6 with 4-speed auto or the 195kw High Output Alloytec V6 with 6-speed manual transmission. It also has 16" steel wheels, cruise control, electronic stability control, and trip computer as standard.

The SV6 comes with the 195kw High Output Alloytec V6 with either 6-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic with 'Active Select'. The SV6 wears a sports bodykit and has a dual exhaust system. It boasts 18" alloy wheels as well as sports suspension.

The SS comes with the new 6.0 litre Generation 4 Alloy V8 that outputs 270kw. It can be configured with 6-speed manual or a new automatic transmission. There is also rear panel storage compartments with nets. The SS rides on 18" alloy wheels, and the driver can enjoy a 6 disc MP3 compatible CD player, sports seats and Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity. The back of the SS looks mean with it's quad exhaust.

The SS V has the same Generation IV V8 as the SS, however a 6.5" multifunctional colour LCD display, dual zone climate control, 6 disc audio system, and 19" alloy wheels are thrown in. The SS V also receives a sport leather package that has the sports profile leather wrapped steering wheel and the leather faces sports seats.

There are also a few new colours that are included for the ute range. That green, "Atomic Metallic" is rather nice.

An interesting feature found in the SS-V is the 6.5" multifunctional colour LCD display. It is mounted in the center console and provides full audio system details, climate controls, and even has the ability to show full colour maps when the GPS system is installed.

I couldn't help but notice that there are several features announced for the VE ute that would be able to be intregrated into the VE sedan (the LCD display for example).

The next VE "thing" we have to look forward to is the wagon. I wonder how long it will be before Holden announce their dual cab ute, and even their AWD drivetrain? No word yet as to when these utes will be rolling off the production line.

VE HSV Rear Lights Coverup

Many owners of the new VE HSV have noticed moisture inside the rear lights. They are fogging up, creating a potential safety hazard and sparking interest in HSV's solution.

Owners have found within their rear lights there are moisture crystals that are designed to absorb any moisture to prevent the fogging from occurring. They are simply replaced at each regular service, all four of them (two in each light).

A document has been found at HSV dealers stating that if a customer asks about this issue then simply advise that it is normal and will not cause any problems.

Owners are questioning the quality of the rear lights. Are they still made in Australia or have HSV allowed them to be manufactured cheaply in a country like China?

This isn't a good thing, especially with word on the street stating that the VE is the slowest selling Commodore of all time. I don't know about some, but I'm not seeing a flood of VE Commodores on the road compared to all the VT/VX/VY/VZs back in their day.

Most Modded VT in Australia

Wayne kindly offered to share with us details about his modded VT. These are his words on it.

"The VT started off as a work car but needed a bit of a makeover as it was a plane jane and I wanted something that stood out. Being a panel beater and having plenty of time on my hands I started to customize it in my carport as I don't have a proper shed to work out of."

"My aim was to do mobile custom body repairs so I needed to use my ride as an example as to what could be done. That's why it's a bit full on as some have informed me."

"I've recently turned it into a hatch back so I could set it up as a camper like the LX Torana hatch back had, which in itself is a pretty neat mod that has had a good response from those who have seen it."

Here are the list of mods from Wayne:

295x35x18 rear 285x35x18front 91/2inch speedy rims all round with adjustable coilovers
Whiteline h/d swaybars
Brakes are 330mm with 4spot callipers
Exhaust is home made s/s 3inch all the way to a dual 3inch tip running out the centre
Fuel supply is a dual Bosch 190 fuel pumps into a 2 litre surge tank and 60 litre alloy fuel cell Mounted in tyre well

Motor is a v6 i built using a crate super 6 block as a base and ported o-ringed and flowed heads

Water injection that comes on at 20lb boost to help any detonation and heat problems

Gen3 AFM and greedy blue emange to control bigger injectors
AFM using HSV XU6 memcal to run motor

"Last dyno result was fouled by over rich tuning causing the spark to be washed out by too much fuel at 4200 revs. I still have to sort out tuning but made a tad over 400rwhp which is way off the expected 500rwhp+ I was hoping for."

"The interior is also fully customised with 4 bucket seats and built in 10 inch touch screen PC to run all my gadgets and engine management."

This is a Commodore that has had the lot done to it. Ground breaking and never seen before modifications are the product of home made parts, panels, and labour. You can't just buy a kit to get a car like this.

Congratulations to Wayne for originality, thank you for providing photos, quotes and mods, and hope he gets that 500rwhp+ on the dyno once those minor issues are sorted.

HSV Test Drive Gone Wrong

Just received an e-mail going around about a VY HSV Clubsport test drive that went all wrong at the end. Not to sure when this actually happened of the outcome of the situation.

This brand new HSV was test driven by a 19 year old at Watson Holden in Bundoora, Victoria.

The 19 year old drove it back way to fast around the corner, up the gutter, traveled the 10 meters to the gate, and then made a landing. The pictures below say it all.

I don't know who took these pictures but if someone does could you please let me know so I can give them credit for them.

It is good to see this sort of stuff happening in South Africa. The parts and know how for the Lumina must be hard to come by so this is a true outcome of determination. Hope one of the Australian magazines takes a look at this beast.

Could the Captiva SUV be HSVed?

It looks like a manipulated image to me...

Imagine if HSV did take this into consideration! We would have a (let's say) modified LS2 producing a solid 250kW+. You wouldn't get the 300kW+ due to the fact this is a heavier car and you need to take into consideration power loss (eg, gear box).

With the coming of a diesel motor from Holden maybe we might see a performance diesel V8 even?

The problem is that there is so much speculation when it comes to HSV and we tend to get our hopes up prematurely. For example, the LS7 V8 debuting in the E Series GTS.

What a GTS Once Meant

Remember that time when a GTS was a limited 100 build performance sedan that had 15kW to 50kW extra than the rest? The GTS was once at the top of the food chain when it came to Australian performance cars with both speed, handling, interior and distinction. You would have your Clubsport drivers, your Senator drivers, your Maloo drivers, and they would all give way to those lucky 300kW GTS drivers (so to speak).

So now what are we faced with? A moral dilemma? An outrage? A calm before the LS7 storm?

The GTS right now offers the same 307kW power plants that the others in the HSV range bare, so what makes it more manly? Would it be the badge, racing suspension, big wheels and brakes, and mean interior and body kit that would make you feel like you weren't driving just a Clubsport? Would you spend the extra dough on the GTS knowing that it can stop faster, take a corner faster, impress your friends with it's badging and price tag, and resell better?

So is HSV just trying to get us comfortable with the 307kW before it hits us with a 330kW+ LS7 GTS? Are we trying to be told that it isn't about the horsepower? Are they trying to target the racing market instead of the blokes that want a fast car that'll leave their backside in the boot?

This is a subject that can be thought out in many ways. What do you all think? What has the GTS turned into?

Just got an e-mail from Holden in their newsletter. Turns out a show will be shown this Sunday to give the inside story on the six year development of the new VE Commodore. Clever marketing stratergy and a good story to tell to our grandchildren when we're older!

Dang! Are they telling us that no one leaked any footage during that six years. Yes I suppose it is possible for them to be completely faithful and sworn in, but for some reason I am stunned!

VE HSV Leakage

Some interesting things have come forward the past few days.

Firstly, thanks to Shane, we have some interesting details on the new E series.

Engine output is 304kw at 6000rpm.
Wheel sizes are 19x8 with 245/40R19, 19x9.5 with 275/35R19 and 20x8 with 245/35R20, 20x9.5 with 275/30 R20. 48mm offset for front and 57mm offset for rear wheels.
Front brake rotors are 365 x 32mm and rear is 350 x 26mm.
Tare mass Clubsport R8 1760kg, GTS 1777kg and Senator 1792kg

And it wouldnt be a leakage without a spy shot!

So what do you think it looks like? It screams out Sports car from Asia, but still has a unique thing about it. This could be a photoshop/fake too so don't make your mind up just yet. The revealing of the E series HSV will be soon!

Updated Falcon Next Month

Next month will see Ford releasing the new updated Falcon.

I think it is interesting that they wait for the VE to be shown, so everyone can focus their attention on what this new Falcon has to offer and forget about the VE.

What to expect with the Falcon? No reduction in price according to Ford. Would be interesting to see if they throw in more features as standard to try and compete with the "value for money" routine when the VE is out.

It's a Ford so who really cares eh? =D

VE HSV Nears Launch

The 2nd installment to the new VE will bring us a whole new line of HSVs. Covers are set to be lifted on the 21st of August. It is not yet confirmed if the same webcast stratergy will be used to show the sheets being pulled off the new VE Commodore based range.

Whats news in terms of transmission? Well we can continue to see the six-speed T56 Tremec manual being used, but it is clear that the 4L65E four-speed auto will be phased out. Instead we should be seeing a six-speed automatic with manual-shifting capabilities, just as we see in the new SS.

In terms of performance, the power gain of the Holden's VE Comodoore to 270kW with the GENIV 6.0 litre V8 will hopefully indicate the HSV will be increasing power also. Currently it is the most powerful production engine in the History of Holden's production history.

Sources are telling us that the likely figures that we will see in the HSV's LS2 will be around 310kW/540Nm, as opposed to the Z series 297kW/530Nm.

Personally, I dont think 310kW comes off the tongue nicely enough so I'm keen on seeing 320kW. Although they could make an awesome reference to John 3:16 and make it 316kW (I wont make stupid comments like that again =D)

The new E Series line up will include the ClubSport, Senator, Senator Signature, and the long wheelbase Grange. The VZ based Maloo, Clubsport R8, SV6000, Coupe4 and the GTO Coupe will still be lost. I still asume that the AWD models will remain with their Z like bodies for the time being.

Hang on, he didnt mention a GTS! Well good news comes straight from HSV saying that a GTS is roughly a year away (just as i guessed). They hinted towards the usage of the 7.0 litre LS7 V8 which puts out 377kW/637Nm in the Corvette Z06. Prices are going to be beyond $100,000. This is also obvious, as it will take them a year to modify the LS7 for usage in the GTS.

HSV are set to make this the most unique looking line of HSVs (until the next model of course). Plans to make the Grange look very eye catching, possibly to compete with the Chrysler 300C. The Commodore based line up, however, are set to be angry looking sports machines. I have a feeling that they are going to make good use out of that twin dual exhaust setup.

Can't say that HSV has kept it's promise of making HSVs look more unqiue and different from Holdens but it is hard to tell with the masking.

Some observations that indicate it is a HSV and it's unique features:

The front does appear to look agressive as the Z series did.
The front appears to be lower and stick out a bit more
The wheels on this one are definately bigger
The exhaust appears to stick out more and be larger
The vehicle has obviously got the HSV brake package from the destinctive red

Lets hope HSV put in the new 6 speed automatic and dont let buyers down with the 4 speed!

It's amazing how it's the New Zealand blogs that dislike the VE. I suppose it's just another reason for them to bag Australia =D. But when you consider the USs positive attitude towards it and the good vibe in forums, I don't think the reaction is all that bad.

A comment fron Jack Yan's blog that I thought was interesting was "We have seen so many spy shots of the car that this was not a huge surprise." I was under the impression that this is the case for most cars. It's better to see the car without all the masking anywho.

I have commented around the place but this is how it stands for me. It is VERY different, as it has incorporated many body aspects from many other cars (Prev. Holdens, Falcon, Audi). What really strikes me is the "American-ness" to it. The big square body that all American cars seem to have. I suppose that is what GM influence is. And the reason the Americans love it is because it looks American - give them what they like and they would have to agree.

"E" Series HSV On Our Minds

So now we have seen the VE Commodore, the question still begs as to the looks and the engine the HSV versions will have.

Holden have set the bar at 270kW when it comes to V8 power. HSV have been rumored to have a 430hp V8 ready for their range. My opinion is that the HSV line up will still have the 400hp just as the Z series did, with the GTS coming back with a 430hp powerplant.

When it comes to speculation about the 7 litre LS7 in store for the GTS, I personally think that is false. The Australian car market is not ready for it. With fuel prices the way it is, the declining sales in big engine cars for Holden/HSV is enough feedback to say that a big thirst V8 like that is not wanted. Ok, there will be buyers out there and the limited edition status will suit the LS7 perfectly, but I think it's best fit for another series or the next model Commodore. My money is that this 430hp LS2 will be on the cards if the GTS does come back.

The VE Commodore looks very GM, and with saying that it looks very sporty and unique as an SS as it is. HSV have made a promise to make sure HSVs looks unique compared with the Holdens. Again saying that it will be very interesting as to how sporty the HSV body mods will look. Hopefully we see some Monaro grilled bonnets as standard =D

No news has been heard of when the HSV line up will be shown and specifications released.

US Love the New VE - More than Our Monaro

Holden made it clear that they were going to pursue sales into overseas markets in regards to the VE.

A posting on Autoblog claims that the VE Commodore SS V will be what the next Pontiac Grand Prix is based on. Just as the Monaro was exported as the GTO. Looking at the comments by US viewers on Autoblog, it is easy to see that most find the new VE something they would love to see for sale in their country. They even find the look of the new Statesman and Caprice something that they would love to see in their showrooms! Obviously Holden have done something right!

Some are arguing that the VE in the US should be manufactured in the US. This is a two sided subject as it would cost GM more money and it dosnt predict well against the poor Monaro based GTO sales. Some are tipping the VE to be a better seller in the US as the GX simply because of the four doors and better looks.

An interesting comment on the Pontiac GTO was that the low sales were partially due to the naming of the vehicle.

A positive comment from TriShield raises some good points:

"If they call it a Pontiac Commodore, G8, or whatever, it should do very well. Just don't repeat the same mistakes that were made with the Monaro. Don't remove all the features, don't mess with the styling, and don't put the fuel tank in the damn trunk. Do replace the L76 Vortec 6.0 (yes, the VE is packing the Vortec out of GM's trucks) with the LS2 6.0."

So if the Commodore does go overseas, they want it they way we like it.

VE Day

The VE has finally been shown to the world today, and after watching the webcast, I'm loving it.

Changes

Replacing the Executive we have the Omega.
The New Alloytec 3.6-litre V6 puts out at standard 180kW and 330Nm.
The SV6, Calais V6 and Calais V V6 puts out 195kW and 340Nm.
New 6 Speed Automatic available on V8 models
The new 6.0-litre V8 puts out 270kW and 530Nm across the V8 board.
There is no Acclaim as the safety features are now standard.
Berlina comes as a V8 optional - If it didnt already.
No SV8.
There are V models of the Calais and the SS

The new V models (SS V and Calais V) are the same deal as the Z models (SSZ, SVZ, CV8-Z) where more features are thrown in. These features could be optionals of the non-V models and features that are simply not avaiable. Holden found that the limited edition Z models increased sales, but were only for a limited time which confused buyers. Now they are standard.

VE Commodore Revealed Sunday

Holden has teamed up with ninemsn to broadcast a live webcast revealing the new VE Commodore.

People should go to the ninemsn website and go to the video player. After 10:30am EST, a Holden logo will be there for people to click which will direct them to the webcat which will begin at 10:40am EST. The webcast is set to finish at 11.15am EST. For those who miss it, the video will be archived.

Once the webcast is complete, the media will be presented with photos of the new VE Commodore that will be in newspapers Monday and in latest copies of car magazines.

Finally we dont have to make out the VE Commodore from spy shots! It will be interesting to see the feedback Holden get's in the forums.

VE Commodore Could See Price Rise

The new VE Commodore has cost Holden millions and millions of dollars for design, testing, prototyping thus making this model the most expensive. New engines were also developed, sending production costs higher.

The question of whether this will show on the price of the vehicles when they become available is still unanswered. We have a new body, new interior, new motors, new technology, new chassis and we can't honestly expect prices to drop or stay the same.

Maloo R8 Breaks World Record

HSV has entered the world record books with the fastest production ute.

The record was last set in February of 04 by a Daimler Chrylser Dodge RAM SRT-10 (Boasting a massive 8.3 litre V10) with a top speed of 248.783 km/h.

HSV’s LS2 6.0 litre V8 Maloo R8 Ute smashed the record and has set the bar at 271.44 kph. The record attempt was done under strictly controlled conditions. It was performed on unused roads at the Federal Governments Woomera Prohibited Area in outback South Australia with over 100 people watching. At the wheel was five time Australian Touring car and Bathurst winning champion Mark Skaife.

The people at Guinness say:

"The first flying kilometre, into the wind, was timed at an average of 165.11 mph (265.72 km/h). The second run, in the opposite direction, averaged 172.22 mph (277.16 km/h). The record was smashed – both runs came to an average of 168.66 mph (271.44 km/h). Congratulations to the team at Australia's HSV!"

This news was featured in daily news reports around the world according to their news sources.

"Records are made to be broken, I think this one will stay for some time to come!", Skaife said after.

Lack of HSV on Wikipedia

I have had a snoop around Wikipedia to try and see what we have there about HSVs. I am actully quite disapointed that the HSV page is quite bland.

If anyone wants to contribute to it, it is free and easy to edit it without signing up. The one for Holden which has a breakdown for all models is what the HSV one should be.

I have taken matters into my own hands and have added sections for recent models and put in place the cars that fell in the model catergory. I also wrote a small piece on each of the listed engines. I distributed the Links part at the bottom into catergories. If you look at the history all those on the 13th June are mine. And I hope the pictures dont breach copyright!

Have a look at the before version here. As you can see it was lacking! Oh well at least I got it up to scratch here. Hope you guys start adding!

So far it looks better than the 3 or 4 paragraphs that were there previously. Make sure you guys keep adding!

A lot of these can be seen around the place today. HSV look alikes.

Body kits are very cheap these days, and they can make your Commodore look like the real thing. Not only do they make your car seem less boring, but can give you that street cred that you are craving for!

What is your take on this? Do you think it is cheating or a style of it's own? If you have any sucess stories or disasters with a body kit and your Commodore then e-mail them in. We would love to share them!

I Smell a Fake HSV Speedo

As discussed on the forum this picture is a sham due to poor photoshop efforts and simply due to the technical things that don't add up.

And lastly, why is the back ground so black? The driver doesn't have the lights on so it can't be night.

Looking at it from the photoshoped perspective it is clear that the following faults are evident

The RPM indicator has been moved from idle at around 750rpm to just under 7000rpm. It is easy to see the top of the 7 cut off, the bloke cropped the indicator a little wide. Also there is bluring around where the indicator should be at idle, clearly he used a clone stamp.
The Overspeed light and the high beam lights are not on. They are just orange blurs put over them to give the effect of speed, and the effect that the car is actully going. Mind you, the highbeam indicator is either blue or green so why is it orange now? And clearly you cant see the actual text and image lit up, just a blur around it.
I am guessing that the speed indicator was on 0, and it would have been no problem as it wouldnt have covered the speed alert. Maybe the blur is covering his errors?
This isn't to do with the photoshoping but why isn't the power light on. If the fool is going to go 270kmph+ then why run her in economy mode?

Well due to the lack of blogs out there for Holden and HSV I decided to take matters into my own hands. Hopefully this blog will cover all the latest news and rumors, and will make reference to all the big topics discussed in the forums about Holden, HSV, V8s, GM, Anti-Ford (hehe =D) etc.
